The name "Strozzapreti" literally translates to PRIEST STRANGLERS. There are two stories behind why this pasta has this name, both dating back over a hundred years.
STORY 1:
This pasta was once the favorite choice of churches and priests to have at diner.Do to the pasta thickness and long swirling body, it was said to be the cause of a few incidents of priests choking because they would eat it do fast and carelessly.
STORY 2:
Woman (mostly married women) in Italian towns would constantly cook for the priests in their community in order to get in good with the church and appear to be a good woman of god. However, this constant cooking for the priest would get the husbands jealous and they would encourage them to cook strozzapreti in the hopes that is would cause the priest to choke on it. They would call the pasta "priest stranglers" amongst themselves as a joke.
YOU DECIDE WHICH YOU BELIEVE.
